The Pioneers of Mont Blanc Trekking

It’s one of the most awe-inspiring sights in Europe: Mont Blanc. Trekking to its iconic summit is a dream for many – and it’s no mean feat, at 4,810 metres. On average, about 20,000 people ascend its summit every year, but their success is dependent on good mountaineering and thorough training. The mountain still presents an incredibly testing challenge, and those who aspire to reaching the top need to be well prepared in body and mind. Acclimatisation treks are vital, as is immersing yourself in expert advice. Reading accounts by those who have made the journey can teach you a lot, as well as inspiring you, and learning about those who have gone before will help you to understand both the mountain and the legacy of its historic champions. Here are some of the people who have paved the way for those who go Mont Blanc trekking today.

Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard

The first ascent to be recorded in the history of Mont Blanc trekking came about after the Genevan aristocrat Horace-Benedict de Saussure offered a reward for a successful attempt. In 1786, Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard set off, summiting on August 8. Balmat, a mountaineer and hunter from Sardinia, was given the title, le Mont Blanc, by Sardinia’s king in honour of his achievement. Paccard was a doctor whose scientific passion and curiosity led him to dream of taking a barometer reading at the great mountain’s summit. Their ascent went down in history as an unprecedented feat of strength, perseverance and daring – they went carrying unwieldy scientific materials, and had no ropes or ice axes. Their mission succeeded where others had failed, and all who reach the summit walk in their footsteps.

Maria Paradis and Henriette d’Angeville

The legacy of Mont Blank trekking is especially fascinating in the historical context of women’s mountaineering. Today, gender is not a barrier for aspiring climbers, but this was far from the case in the 18th and 19th centuries. Maria Paradis was the first woman to climb to the top. She was a maid from Chamonix, and accompanied one of Balmat’s later expeditions in 1808. It was not an easy ascent for her, but she persevered and the party reached the top on July 14. Maria de Mont Blanc, as she became known, did not climb again after that, but she championed women climbers thereafter. When, 30 years later, Henriette d’Angeville became the second woman to ascend the summit, Paradis attended the celebration of her successful return to personally congratulate her. D’Angeville, a French woman from an aristocratic background, was passionate about walking and had long dreamed of Mont Blanc trekking. She realised her dream in 1838, and went on to climb 21 more mountains and found a museum of mineralogy. Today’s climbers, whether male or female, can take inspiration from these pioneering women.

Vacation Packages: Its Drawbacks

So, you have decided to take a short vacation and spend it in some cozy resort where you intend to relax and unwind. There is probably one thing that is running through your mind- how to make the necessary arrangements to get to your chosen place of vacation like how to book your flight or which hotel to stay or where to go. Well there is no need for you to be stressed thinking and planning for that short getaway. It is a good thing that most travel agencies today are now offering certain vacation packages that you can choose from for your vacation needs.

These vacation deals have become popular because of the convenience that they provide to those who avail them. Travelers can now focus on the more important travelling issues while the travel agency takes care of the practical matters related to the trip through the vacation packages that they offer. Matters like the flight to book, the accommodation to take, the trip sidelights and the places to visit and see during the vacation will now be handled and arranged by the travel agency saving the traveler some precious time and energy. This is what makes vacation packages attractive to most travelers.

However, while it may appear that these vacation packages provide certain discernible benefits to the traveler, there are also certain disadvantages that are associated with them. Hence, for a better appreciation of the concept of vacation packages and to avoid the known pitfalls, it is necessary to become oriented with these vacation packages drawbacks:

1. There are vacation deals which impose certain limitations or restrictions. However, this is understandable because these travel packages have been generally created for the budget conscious. Hence, changing the inclusions of these packages will not be feasible as it would result to certain upward cost implications.

2. Another downside of availing of these vacation treats is that you cannot be guaranteed of exclusivity. It is a usual practice for some travel agencies to accommodate other travelers and mix them together in a particular package. As a result, expect that you will have other companions whom you are not totally familiar. So, if you are not that sociable and used to dealing with strangers, you better consider this before buying a vacation deal.

3. Vacation packages oftentimes will result as more expensive because you are effectively paying additional cost for the services that the travel agencies provide to you. As the saying goes, there is price for convenience.

4. When you travel and avail of these deals, you do not have control on how the tour will go as the places that you visit have been pre-determined. Sometimes, you waste your time in places which you are never interested in but have no choice but to go because it is part of the vacation package that you availed.

For example, most vacation packages available today would include a side trip to the museum. However, there are people who are not really fans of museum but they felt obligated to go because they have already paid for such side trip. It is also possible that the hotel that you will be staying will also be pre-determined by the travel agency. However, you have to make sure that you are booked in Hawaii hotels as they are normally the best places to stay.
